2026 Summer Intern Spotlight

Strayos is proud to introduce… Seongwoo (Samuel) Park!

Samuel joins us from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, or more commonly known as Virginia Tech, where he studies computer engineering with a focus on machine learning and software intelligence.

Originally from the Republic of Korea, Samuel has traveled all over the world and lived in a number of places. Fortunately, Samuel has taken the leap to join us in St. Louis, and we have been able to be joined by this amazing person for the Summer as part of the 2026 Summer Intern class.

We sat down with Samuel to ask him a few questions about him and why he chose Strayos.

What inspired you to study what you are studying?

My drive to study industrial robotics started with a simple realization: the backbone of modern society shouldn't rely on processes that are dangerous or physically exhausting for humans. By focusing on automation, I get to design systems that take on high-risk and repetitive tasks, protecting human workers while driving incredible safety and efficiency in how we build the world.

What interested you about Strayos? Why did you apply?

I applied to Strayos because applying computer vision to the mining industry is a game-changer for site safety and operational precision. The opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI that solves complex, real-world physical challenges directly on the ground is what immediately pulled me in.

What do you want to do in the future?

My goal for the future is to push the boundaries of industrial automation by helping build end-to-end autonomous mining operations. From precision blasting to crushing and extraction, I want to develop smart systems that streamline the entire process, making operations significantly safer, cleaner, and more efficient.

How do you see your time at Strayos contributing to your plans? What do you hope to accomplish during your time with us?

My time at Strayos is the ideal bridge between working on raw technology and deploying real-world solutions, starting with advancing our current prototype into a market-ready product. During my time here, I want to drive mark detection accuracy as close to 100% as possible, setting a new benchmark for computer vision performance in automated mining workflows.

What are you working on right now?

I am prototyping a hand-held mapping device by integrating battery, NRU 51+, Zed 2i, and RTK (GNSS Receiver). The goal is to visualize a terrain using a method called SLAM and to demonstrate a 3D photorealistic map.

Tell us something personal about you!

I love sea food (crabs, shrimp, lobster) and I love learning about different areas of engineering (mining, industrial, etc).
