But the work to measure and track piles is still too manual on a lot of sites. It’s also inconsistent. If you ask three different engineers to draw the toe of the same pile, you get three different volumes.

That inconsistency kills your end-of-month reconciliation.

We built SAI (Segmentation AI) to fix this. It's an AI-powered tool that automatically finds the toe of your piles and segments them in 3D—no manual polygon drawing required.

In this webinar, we covered:

New 3D SAI tool We taught our system to recognize what a stockpile looks like. It looks at the geometry of your site—the slopes, the angles, the flat ground—and it draws the boundary line (the toe) for you. It separates the coal from the gravel, and the gravel from the wall.

The accuracy comparison: We’ll compare the AI’s auto-generated toe lines against manual survey data so you can see and understand the difference.

Inventory reporting: How to go from flight to a PDF report without drawing a single polygon manually.

The ROI breakdown: Actual labor hours saved per survey, and what that means for your team's capacity.

Polls:

Q&A:

Do you guys have GCPs available? As an example right now we use Propeller, and they provide us with Aeropoints for our GCPs.

We do not supply GCPs; however we recommend using black and white tiles or using spray-paint marks (X’s or Chevrons) which can be marked as GCPs. These have the benefit of being a much lower cost, can be left at site for more permanent ground control, and if damaged or destroyed is easily replaced.

I know most of stockpiles inventory is done in summer. Do you AI model takes into consideration snow periods?

In non-ideal survey conditions such as snow covered stockpiles assuming the data can be captured and rendered it will treat the surface of the snow as the surface of the stockpile. This would not have a change to the functionality of the AI for calculating volumes and determining the toe of the stockpile. These conditions should be noted in the inventory report by the responsible party as the inventory volumes will likely be higher than if the material was not snow covered.

Can this AI remove any equipment like your stickers or reclaimers within a stockpile?

Yes, there is a setting on uploading named “Auto remove equipment” which has an option to select “Conveyor Removal”. This will normally help remove stackers at site automatically in processing. Also using the DTM surface rather than the DSM surface will help ensure the stackers are removed from the data.

Presenter:

James Kenney, VP of Revenue Operations

With 15+ years in the mining and survey industry, James has worked in as an Engineer across several companies and has accumulated a multitude of knowledge in cutting-edge solutions in photogrammetry, 3D machine vision, AI, and more.

Moderator:

Jose Manuel, Solutions Engineer

With a couple of years in the mining industry, Jose has experience in sales and implementing solutions to improve overall performance. Any social feed, lots of books, as well as the wikipedia. Anything that's related to the text will utilized to build this LLM that's continually evolving. Strayos models, we predominantly focus on the computer vison, the machine vision. It takes the data such as images, LiDar sensors, or any other information where you can build information from the pixels. Images, videos, LiDar... we structure that information to find patterns. The typical difference in these models is that these are all visual models. This means it utilizes the networks, which is trained to identify different aspects and the pattern recognition.

Can you explain why Strayos isn't subject to some of the problems LLMs have such as bias, hallucinations, synciffency? (Synciffcency is when chat gpt tells you how wonderful you are all the time and how great everything you do is.)

So I think what I call, hallucinations does exist. It's more in terms of predicting the wrong things from the visual perspective. For an example, if there's a haul road and it has predicted that a bomb which is not necessarily a full bomb but ther's a pile of rock on the side of the road. Those things does exist. What we call the model anomalies or the false positives. We go and retrain those false positives. There's a continuous situation there. Another example is in terms of the rock detections. Alot more bias coming in size detection. We go and retrain those size detection models. In comparison with the LLMs, you have the bias. The LLMs are bias not because it is giving you the wrong information, it's because how it is trained. It's limiting a certain set of knowledge. It may feel like bias but it is resulting from a limited set of information where the model is limited.

Where does the design measure learn loop break most often in live operations and why?

The design learn loop really what we are seeing it works consistently well in the one department phase which means if you have a blasting department or a geology department, they may update the rock model there. Once going into the mill side, this is where the biggest disconnect happens . You don't have that information readily available until you start to put a process and you start to measure things more effectively. That's one of the areas we are doing alot of work. How do we build the sensor layer of data collection so that this collection of data comes alot more easier. This is where we see alot more gaps.

What failed more often in AI projects: the models, the data quality, or the operating model.

In our experience, what we have seen is a whole lot related to the data quality. If the data is not good at the very first level, the model fails. We can train this data to find out the data which is bad, but it has not reached to that level yet. The data is the key factor where the model underperforms. The other aspect of the model underperformance is the model has gone through a continuous process and it does require teaching them continuously. The teaching also required the calibration of the models and if the calibration is not happening from the user input side, that's where the model will stay stagnant and it will not continue to improve. The user input is another driving factor along with the model training which is from the AI engineers who specifically train.

How concerned should we be that the AI will go rogue and destroy humanity?

For now I think we're at the stage where we're finding basic use cases so I'm not worried about that.

What is general AI?

I understand the question as what is general artificial intelligence which is creating one model that has answers to everything. That's the general intelligence which is the level of the human intelligence. We are far to away from that. We're still solving word models which is teaching the physics requires alot of computing and training and we are not at that stage, having the general intelligence.

Presenter:

Ravi Sahu, CEO and Founder of Strayos

With a background in engineering and over a decade of experience in digital transformation and product management, Ravi worked with Fortune 500 companies worldwide before founding Strayos. Those are your key inputs. Then you have the geological model data and any type of geotechnical information you can bring in. For example, backbreak data you can bring in. Those are useful there. Then after, from the learning perspective calibration, you can evolve this data set. The other area I would consider is your block models. If you’re block models are continuously being updated, that also helps in the calibration type of model.

Do you use a post-blast drone survey as an input?

Yes, that is one of the key parameters for the AI for the calibration. Utilization of the post blast or drone survey. We take as much data generated from the pre-blast which each movement and then we use that information compared with the post blast what are the significant differences there and then that gets fed back into the AI model.

What software did you use for DEM modeling?

DEM Modeling is mostly the. We don’t use the actual software itself. Within the physics modeling, there are tools: particle n-sis models. That’s on the DEM modeling side.

Is the pre and post blast rock mass balanced?

It doesn’t happen often which mean you may have a pre-blast rock mass survey that has been done or if you have already existing data. After the blast occurs, the data changes. That’s based on the calibration. That depends on the geologist and the control site if they have that data and if they have the new rock mass. that information sometimes is a limiting factor that nobody is collecting that after the blast.

Since data quality matters, have you quantitatively checked how well both the synthetic data your model uses and the synthetic data it produces match real blast data? How do you ensure the quality and realism of these synthetic datasets?

With the approaches as new data is coming and the calibration will become more important. What I anticipate at this moment, the centric data that has been generated it is lively predicting what the burden velocity movement as well as the energy distribution. We are seeing are lively metrics there. After we combine the physics model, the goal is to make the material movement more accurate and that will require more motor trations there.

The quality we make sure that we have a pre cleanup process. any data coming in from the survey side or the drill and blast loading and timing, any additional parameters including the rock blast. We evaluate with the QAQC approach. Then the new synthetic data we are creating. Then for example looking at the rock movement, the XYZ vectors so those also get validated by the scripting technology the accuracy of the data.

Which AI are you using? Is it an off-the-shelf solution or a RAG system based on an open-source model?

This is trained in-house. We don’t use a RAG. It’s a combination of a physics model and a chronolution newal network. You can search and there is a frame work there. There’s no full developed model you can utilize off the shelf but there is framework called physics informed newal network. There have been alot of papers written but that’s kind of the framework we’re using but we still have developed the architecture by taking the chronolution newal network, we trained it, and incorporated with physics. We don’t use RAG for this as this is an in-house developed system.

Presenter:

<img src="https://blog.strayos.com/content/images/2025/07/Screenshot-2025-07-10-at-10.30.48-AM.png" class="kg-image" alt="Webinar Summary: Where Did Your Ore Go? He recently completed his Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering at Standford University and is staying at the same university to pursue a Master in Mechanical Engineering until 2026.

💡

"I’m excited by the idea of building intelligent systems that can interact with and improve the world around us."

What inspired you to study what you are studying?

I’ve always loved building things and solving problems, which led me to study mechanical engineering. Over time, I became really interested in robotics, assistive technology, and how to make systems more intelligent. Electrical engineering felt like the natural next step—it complements my mechanical background and let's me design solutions that bring together both disciplines of engineering.

What interested you about Strayos? Why did you apply?

I had the chance to speak with Ravi, the CEO, and he shared the work Strayos was doing. I was really intrigued by how the company applies AI in such a novel way—most people think of AI in the context of things like self-driving cars or virtual assistants, but Strayos is using it to transform heavy industries like mining and construction. That kind of innovative, practical use of AI really stood out to me. It’s clear the company is making big strides in the industry, and I was excited by the opportunity to contribute to that vision.

What do you want to do in the future?

I want to work in robotics. It’s a field that brings together mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, and it’s that multidisciplinary nature that really drew me to it. The possibilities are endless—from rovers that explore space, to surgical robots, to systems that assist with everyday tasks. I’m excited by the idea of building intelligent systems that can interact with and improve the world around us.

How do you see your time at Strayos contributing to your plans? What do you hope to accomplish during your time with us?

Strayos gives me the chance to work on real-world, intelligent systems in challenging environments—exactly the kind of work I hope to do in the future. This internship lets me apply both my mechanical and electrical background to a practical robotics-related problem. I’m gaining valuable hands-on experience on a project with real impact, and I have been given a great level of ownership for the project which has boosted my confidence and deepened my understanding of how real-world engineering projects are run.

What are you working on right now?

I’m currently developing a lens cleaning system for the Netra 3D camera system, which is used in harsh industrial environments like mining. The goal is to design a reliable, low-maintenance solution that keeps the camera lenses clean for accurate image capture and analysis. I’m evaluating different cleaning mechanisms—like water jets, air jets, and hydrophobic coatings—and working toward a dual-nozzle system that can clean both cameras.

Tell us something personal about you!

Coming from England, I am a huge football (or as it's called in the states soccer) fan and I have been following the sport for as long as I can remember. My favourite team is Manchester United and I have been able to attend a few matches at Old Trafford Stadium.

Thank you Hamad for joining us this summer and we are excited to be working with you here at Strayos!

Interested in an internship at Strayos?

Apply Now

We love our team. Mines and quarries are extremely dynamic environments, with change occurring daily. As seasons change, sites open up, and structures are built surrounding a mine or quarry, having an updated site security plan is critical. A vital component of any site secrity plan is maintaining a “crow's nest” for the BIC (blaster in charge) to safely put eyes on the site and the blast (if possible). Alongside a crow's nest, identifying exclusion zones for personnel and equipment is also needed. Safety is the name of the game when it comes to explosives, and Strayos is here to help.

Strayos has a powerful tool for improving blast safety on site: The Blast Exclusion Zone.

This tool gives users a calculated distance from a planned blast to inform personnel and equipment removal before blasting operations. Flyrock damage to structures and equipment can be costly; however, it does not compare to personnel injury or loss. Blasting comes with many risks, this tool makes reporting blast zones easy for all users, and helps reduce some of those risks.

💡

Want to learn more about creating a safer work site? As someone studying Finance and Data Analytics, I was drawn to how Strayos applies cutting-edge technology to transform traditionally manual, high-stakes environments. Working at a small company like this provides me with numerous opportunities to interact with the CEO, engineers, marketing team, sales team, and others. Most people who intern at larger companies typically remain stationary within them. In contrast, I have been given numerous opportunities to be an active part of the company and contribute to its growth. Not only that, but I have the chance to hear about how the company was started, and learn about what it takes to run a successful business. Why did you apply?

In any opportunity I am given, I strive to make a long-lasting impact towards the company and most importantly, the customers/audience. I first heard about Strayos from one of my great friends who had a fantastic experience interning with them. I started researching and diving deeper into what the company is and does. What truly interested me was the vision that Strayos aims to revolutionize the mining industry with AI and technology to create time and money efficiency and to increase safety for miners. That's when I knew I wanted to use my experiences in Marketing and Data Analytics to improve and make a permanent impact in a specific and niche industry.

What do you want to do in the future?

Marketing and Data Analytics allows me to identify opportunities and bring them to life—from initial idea to strategy, execution, and results. At a small company like Strayos, I get to be involved in every phase of the process, which makes seeing the impact of my work even more meaningful. Potentially becoming a Marketing Analyst or an Events Marketing Specialist is the goal.

How do you see your time at Strayos contributing to your plans? Additionally, being able to have the creative freedom to brainstorm and work on unique projects tailored towards a unique industry has been great. With Strayos, I am analyzing their social media data identify opportunities for easy and immediate improvement to their reach and retention. Then assisting in executing the improvements. I am also helping to improve segmentation of their email list for more targeted outreach

What are you working on right now?

I'm creating a customer spotlight campaign by interviewing customers, post processing, creating graphics, shorts and blogs. expanding company's LinkedIn reach, email segmentation for more targeted customer advertising, and optimizing Youtube.

Tell us something personal about you!

One of my favorite hobbies is traveling across the country or the world. Growing up, I saw technology evolve around me, and toward my adolescence, I became more and more curious with how computers work. I was exposed to light coding in high school. Many years later, it's what pushed me to start investing time into truly studying technology in a more formal setting. The world of computers and technology is constantly growing and it helps me pursue my curiosity in constructive ways because it's an ever-evolving landscape.

What interested you about Strayos? Why did you apply?

While artificial intelligence continues to have prominence in the media, its nature is usually concealed and its purpose misinterpreted. Going in, I had some knowledge on topics such as evolutionary algorithms and had seen its practice in small-scale environments. To be honest, I was interested in expanding the boundaries of my knowledge in a real-world environment. The idea of getting to work alongside AI engineers and affect the mining industry in a positive way pushed me toward applying.

What do you want to do in the future?

I am driven by my passion for solving problems, and I am open to exploring possibilities I can pursue within the technology industry. I'm interested in three specific areas: Systems administration, Networking, and Security. All three areas are connected, yet each offer unique and interesting challenges that can help me to grow into my full potential.

How do you see your time at Strayos contributing to your plans? More importantly, I am being exposed to areas of the industry that I haven't seen or have had limited experience with. Formal education is a great starting point; however, I've long hoped to actually contribute to a real experience. My goal is to learn, grow, and have a true impact on the world.

What are you working on right now?

At Strayos, I am exploring the intricacies of interconnected, real-world systems, and discovering the world of continuous integration and deployment. Monitoring haul roads along with the fuel consumption, tire life, and lifespan of the trucks’ cycling will only assist in cost savings through the lifespan of the machinery.

Grade Analysis

Strayos’ Haul Road AI automatically detects haul road grades and alerts you to areas with risky or sudden changes. Strayos creates a workflow for its users that conducts rapid analysis of Haul Road grades, to then feed the decision-making process for areas of Haul Roads that require attention. Grade changes can happen quickly, having a direct effect on daily production rates within a Mine or Quarry.

Setting thresholds to categorize grades throughout a mine haul roads can quickly provide analysis..

3D Grade visualization highlights road segments that fall within or without of design compliance.

Visualization of sudden change in road grade

Analyzing elevation profiles of specific road segments can provide more granular information such as where excessive changes in grade can affect haul truck performance. Sudden jumps in grade change can have a negative effect on haul truck haul times, excessive engine wear, and fuel consumption.

2. Road Width

Road width is critical to measure and maintain for haul road safety and compliance purposes, as well as ensuring smooth traffic flow. As pit conditions change over time, haul roads can become pinch points for traffic flow, also creating safety hazards. Monitoring road width can identify these problematic areas before they create potential incidents.

Pictured above, the haul road segments are set to color coded thresholds to highlight where haul roads do not meet minimum width requirements.

3. Cross Falls

As weather cycles pass through Mines and Quarries, managing water runoff becomes critcal. Washed out haul roads do not only slow down traffic, but also create safety concerns for roads above and below. Freeze and thaw cycles will also have serious effects on haul roads as seasons change, where precipitation can create hazardous road conditions. Measuring Cross Falls provides engineers with information regarding how Haul Roads are changing and where roads are banking or draining precipitation.

4. Berms

Carrying along the topic of Safety, Berms may be the most critical point to measure when conducting Haul Road Analysis. Per MSHA requirements, berms must be at least mid - axle height of the largest self propelled mobile equipment that travels the roadway. With the help of AI, berms are automatically detected and measured when conducting Haul Road analysis. Custom thresholds can then be set to ensure compliance is being met within the Mine or Quarry.

An Area of Interest (AOI) is drawn to analyze an area of haul routes for berm height. Change Monitoring

Change is always occurring, whether we like it or not. Haul roads on site will change due to traffic patterns, precipitation events, freeze/thaw cycles, and excavation, just to name a few.

Being able to monitor road conditions to see where change is occurring and maintaining proper road design will help keep the operation running. Not to mention the ability to monitor progress on maintenance work.

💡

Pro Tip: Be Pro-active.
