Intern Spotlight - Hamad Iqbal

Intern Spotlight - Hamad Iqbal

Strayos is proud to introduce...

Hamad Iqbal!

Hamad Iqbal is our Summer 2025 Robotics Intern and we are thrilled for him to join us this summer!

Originally from Rochdale, UK, Hamad ventured to the United States to further his education. He recently completed his Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering at Standford University and is staying at the same university to pursue a Master in Mechanical Engineering until 2026.

"I’m excited by the idea of building intelligent systems that can interact with and improve the world around us."

What inspired you to study what you are studying?

I’ve always loved building things and solving problems, which led me to study mechanical engineering. Over time, I became really interested in robotics, assistive technology, and how to make systems more intelligent. Electrical engineering felt like the natural next step—it complements my mechanical background and let's me design solutions that bring together both disciplines of engineering.

What interested you about Strayos? Why did you apply?

I had the chance to speak with Ravi, the CEO, and he shared the work Strayos was doing. I was really intrigued by how the company applies AI in such a novel way—most people think of AI in the context of things like self-driving cars or virtual assistants, but Strayos is using it to transform heavy industries like mining and construction. That kind of innovative, practical use of AI really stood out to me. It’s clear the company is making big strides in the industry, and I was excited by the opportunity to contribute to that vision.

What do you want to do in the future?

I want to work in robotics. It’s a field that brings together mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, and it’s that multidisciplinary nature that really drew me to it. The possibilities are endless—from rovers that explore space, to surgical robots, to systems that assist with everyday tasks. I’m excited by the idea of building intelligent systems that can interact with and improve the world around us.

How do you see your time at Strayos contributing to your plans? What do you hope to accomplish during your time with us?

Strayos gives me the chance to work on real-world, intelligent systems in challenging environments—exactly the kind of work I hope to do in the future. This internship lets me apply both my mechanical and electrical background to a practical robotics-related problem. I’m gaining valuable hands-on experience on a project with real impact, and I have been given a great level of ownership for the project which has boosted my confidence and deepened my understanding of how real-world engineering projects are run.

What are you working on right now?

I’m currently developing a lens cleaning system for the Netra 3D camera system, which is used in harsh industrial environments like mining. The goal is to design a reliable, low-maintenance solution that keeps the camera lenses clean for accurate image capture and analysis. I’m evaluating different cleaning mechanisms—like water jets, air jets, and hydrophobic coatings—and working toward a dual-nozzle system that can clean both cameras.

Tell us something personal about you!

Coming from England, I am a huge football (or as it's called in the states soccer) fan and I have been following the sport for as long as I can remember. My favourite team is Manchester United and I have been able to attend a few matches at Old Trafford Stadium.

Thank you Hamad for joining us this summer and we are excited to be working with you here at Strayos!
